Medical Hospital Beds
If you or a loved one is suffering from a lengthy illness, recovering from major surgery or have general suffering issues then medical hospital beds for the home will enable you to be as comfortable as possible. They offer varying levels of adjustment that will provide you with the most comfort you can possible get from a bed and give caretakers easier access to their patients. Hospital beds can be adjusted in height to make it easier for the patient to enter and exit the bed. When selecting hospital beds for home use there are a number of options and understanding these options will enable you to make the right choice for your needs or the needs of your loved one.
Different Types of Beds
There are basically three different types of medical hospital beds on the market today. If you or someone else in the home has the ability to manually adjust the bed’s height then a manual bed is a good choice. For those concerned with cost, manual hospital beds are much less expensive than their electric or semi-electric counterparts. You can typically purchase a new manual hospital bed for around $500 or so. Semi-electric beds provide electric operations for adjusting the mattress. You can raise and lower the head, knee and leg area of the mattress allowing for more comfort. In order to raise and lower the bed for access to the patient, a manual crank is used. Finally, electric beds are the most preferred simply because they offer the most convenience of all three types. All of the bed’s operations are done using a small motor underneath the bed. In order to adjust the comfort levels or the height of the bed you simply push a button. These are however, the most expensive of the three types and if you cannot get your insurance to cover the cost then electric models may simply be out of the question for many patients.
Safety Rails
It is important that you check medical hospital beds before you purchase to see if a mattress and safety rails are included in the total cost. Both are necessary for using a hospital bed. Safety rails help to ensure that the patient does not fall from the bed which is a major concern for many elderly and those recovering from major surgery. Telescoping bed rails that run the entire length of the bed are the preferred type to prevent accidents and they can be taken off the bed or installed whenever needed. They adjust up and down to give the patient more comfort and to provide easier access to the patient for caregivers. Universal rails that run half of the bed length are also popular choices on medical hospital beds and give the patient a bit more freedom while still offering safety. You will need to choose the specific type of bedrails that you or the patient feels most comfortable using before you purchase a hospital bed. Finding the right bed will help to speed recovery time and ensure that you or your loved one is comfortable and safe during the recovery process.
